Goal

The pilot activities included the deployment of ShopperTrak technologies at the UI LABS facility to test the use case of the technology in an office / event space setting and to learn about how the technology could be integrated into a building automation systems.

Outcome

Equipment was maintained at UI LABS for demonstration purposes these learnings will be incorporated into future pilot efforts.

EXPUNGE.IO

Goal

Expunge.io is a website designed for people with juvenile records in Cook County to start the process or expunging, or erasing, those records. Conceived by Mikva Challenge Juvenile Justice Council (JJC) during our CivicSummer program, and with the development support of Cathy Deng, this youth-driven tool was built to educate young people about the value of expungement and connect them with LAF’s Juvenile Expungement Help Desk for free legal aid. In addition, other goals of the Expunge.io initiative included increasing public awareness, supporting the work of juvenile expungement institutions, and documenting the process.

Outcome

We secured a fingerprint terminal for the Cook County Juvenile Center to support the LAF Juvenile Expungement Help Desk in accessing RAP sheets. The Expunge.io website has been transitioned to Mikva Challenge to continue the growth and development of this project.

SMART BUILDING DATA SERVICE

Goal

Owners and operators of buildings across cities cannot effectively harvest the data created by connected systems and devices to efficiently prioritize energy and operational improvements across their property portfolio. In addition, given fragmented data streams, processes, and the highly manual process of building inspections, cities are not able to efficiently monitor the quality and safety, or enforce code compliance, of building stock to the benefit of all citizens. The pilot activities completed with IIT students captured and analyzed a defined set of data inputs to gauge the ability to deliver recommendations and algorithms that will produce insights on targeted energy savings and maintenance efficiency. In addition, the data analysis efforts explored the design of statistical algorithms to deliver these insights wherever feasible.

Outcome

Students participating in the pilot identified a number of key challenges associated with data capture and data cleanliness and these learnings will be incorporated into future pilot efforts.
