City and state officials broke ground Thursday for the rehab of a former window plant on Goose Island into Chicago's Digital Lab for Manufacturing.

Construction started this week for the lab, which will occupy about one-third of the building at 1333 North Hickory. When finished in the first quarter of 2015, it will house offices, meeting rooms, a 75-person lecture hall and a small factory floor.

The cost of renovations will be paid with money pledged by the city and state. Chicago committed $10 million in tax increment financing and the state agreed to put in $16 million. The money is part of $330 million in cash and in-kind contributions from companies, governments, community groups, organizations and universities. The biggest contribution is a $70 million grant from the Defense Department.
